About the Role
The Health Information Management Specialist is responsible for maintaining all medical records both in electronic and paper files in accordance with HIPAA privacy and security rules. The HIM Specialist processes release of information (ROI) requests in a timely and efficient manner and ensures that every ROI is in compliance with company policy, and federal (HIPAA) and state regulatory requirements. This position must provide exceptional customer service to patients/customers in situations that often require tight turnaround times, higher expectations and involve concerns with billing.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of medical record and ROI experience in a health care setting.
- Experience with an electronic medical record.
- Enrollment in an accredited Health Information Management program may substitute for experience.
- Associate's degree in health information management or other health related field preferred.
Essential
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Ensures the
confidentiality and security of medical records and protected health
information in accordance with Meridian's policy, HIPAA, state and federal
regulations.
- Organizes and
manages patient health information in electronic and hard copy formats.
- Enters, scans,
retrieves, sorts, assembles and/or attaches health/medical documents to
the patient's electronic medical record, according to Meridian procedures
and guidelines.
- Reviews ROI
requests for required elements and validity.
- Formulates and
initiates an action plan for records disclosure based upon the validity of
the disclosure authorization and information being requested.
- Ensures ROI
requests are processed timely and accurately, according to established
procedures and standards of quality.
- Assists
clients/customers with requests for information or service.
- Additional duties
include those requested by the Director of Health Information Management.
Knowledge,
Skills, Abilities:
Specific
competencies required are identified on a department/program specific basis and
identified in each employee's Competency Checklist. The following are general and apply to all
positions with this title.
- Strong knowledge
of HIPAA, state and federal laws governing substance abuse and mental
health records.
- Knowledge of
medical records procedures and compliance.
- Demonstrated
proficiency using computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
- Must have strong
communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to relate
effectively to the public and health care professionals.
- Ability to
organize and prioritize.
- Ability to multi-task
and use multiple software programs.
- Ability to think
clearly and quickly.
- Ability to operate
office machines, including fax, telephone and computer.
